We're focussed on breeding the composite sheep of the future, an animal that minimises workload and maximises profits. Focusing genetic selection on clean shedding, highly maternal genetics with plenty of growth and parasite resistance. The breeding is all done with the end product front of mind... carcasses that meat buyers line up for and end consumers prefer.
Using the highest performing maternal shedding genetics available we're creating animals that get the job done, with high selection pressure being applied to the Lochs flock to ensure we deliver genetics that will perform at the top.
We understand the desire from the composite industry to do something about the divide between wool income and costs (the driving force of our move to shedders). So we're determined to offer the genetics that will do it, whilst keeping a firm focus on productivity and profits.

What sets us apart
width, depth and muscling.
Through heavy selection on both PEMD and depth & width in the phenotype we've created animals that excel maternally and deliver carcasses that meat buyers want. Lambs yielding over 50% from full, and ewes that get it done with less input.
performance recorded, data driven shedders.
Every lamb tagged at birth, and countless measurements along the way all submitted to Sheep Genetics, to ensure highly accurate EBV's. This data capture and subsequent EBV's enable us to maximise genetic gain, creating the most profitable sheep for our clients
foot structure, bred in the toughest environment.
Too many shedders have poor feet. Heavy clay soils & 1200mm rainfall... if feet can hold up here they'll hold up anywhere. Our selection pressure on feet is greater than anywhere, all ram lambs scored for structure then all sale rams tipped over for scoring pre sale. Our cull rate has been high, and thats how we've got to where we are.
elite shedding.
High rainfall, high stocking rate and minimal sunlight hours mean our environment is tough on shedding, it also means whatever system or environment our genetics go into their shedding ability lifts instead of slipping like others. We've gone through the crossing process in our wooled commercial composites, and know exactly what it takes.
fertility and growth
We focus on fertile genetics that conceive well and get those lambs to weaning as heavy as possible. ERA (and YERA) and WR (and YWR) are followed closely while muscle, fat and early growth also contribute to creating a highly fertile animal. Our ewe lambs scanned 132% with no grain assistance in 2026, with commercial mobs well into the 180's.
doing ability and worm resistance
The focus on genetic muscle, fat and condition score along with worm resistance (PEMD, PFAT, CS and PWEC) has created animals that require less.
Where we breed them and how we treat them forces the cream to come to the top, and the animals that cant cope to drop out the bottom.
Eye muscle and fat scanning, condition scoring and weighing of ewes pre joining and individual faecal samples taken of young stock results in accurate EBV's that enable big gains in these area's.

Obtained from Lambpro in a swap, he's got the fat, muscle, finish and carcass that will fit right in at Lochs.
